The five pointed star, a Sumerian symbol for Venus, originates in the astronomical observation by these ancients of the movement of the planet through the seasons. In Pythagorean mysticism the pentagram stands for the human being (a figure with arms and legs outstretched). Pythagoreans used the symbol as a wish for good health.

Any of the stars can be put within a circle. Here's the 7 Pointed Star in 14kt gold within a circle. The star ruby is a vernuil ruby, plum colored, with a precise 6 pointed star. The star is difficult to photograph but very obvious in sunlight or halogen light. Both this piece and the 14kt gold 8 pointed star (one after next) have unusual bails. We generally prefer wire bails but the customers who ordered this piece and the one after next wanted bails that could be snapped off and on. The prices are for normal bails. Need I say that other stones can be put in the middle? You know that!

The 8 pointed star is a Gnostic symbol, known as the octagram of creation. It is related to Venus, and is also sacred to Ishtar. In Nordic traditions the octagram is used to invoke magick and also as a protecting ideogram. Chaospheres have 8 points - order 90 degrees and chaos 45 degrees .

The compass star is composed of 8 points - 4 tall ones which stand for the primary 4 directions (N, S, E and W - ah duh!) and 4 short ones (NE, SE etc etc). I'm not sure why N, S etc are considered more "major" than NE or SE as whatever direction one needs to go would seem to be to be as important as one one didn't need to go....but what do I know. The design also references the conjunction of Jupiter and Venus that occurred in 2 BCE. This design is used a lot in heraldry.

This is an alternative to the traditional eight pointed star. It is exactly the same as the design below except that the jump ring is placed on top of a point instead of between the points. For the meaning see below and, by the way, should you extend all the lines till they meet one another you end up with the 8 pointed star of the first three images. Magick? Of a sort.

This is the traditional Star of Ishtar. Composed of two intertwined squares, this is a symbol of regeneration. It is a symbol for the natural universe interweaving order and disorder, yin and yang, to create an ultimately harmonious and balanced design. Here the jump ring is placed between the points.

We have actually made 13 Pointed stars, but that's probably the limit for stars with internal cuts, depending on the size. If you want a star 3 inches in diameter you could probably have 24 points! This design can be made with or without a circle. The next symbol's description gives the meaning of the 12 pointed star. In a duodecimal system, twelves are everywhere you care to look (clocks, inch rulers, calendars etc). The system of dividing into twelfths remains a bit of a mystery though "Being a versatile denominator in fractions" might have something to do with it! We can make 9 pointed stars (nonagrams) ten pointed stars (decagrams) or 11 pointed stars (who knows?) too. One of these days someone may even order an Enneagram!

This is another variant of the 12 pointed interlacement. 12 pointed stars are found cross culturally and can refer to the 12 Disciples, the 12 Knights of the Celtic Round Table, the 12 Signs of the Zodiac, the 12 lictors of Romulus, the 12 Peers of France and even the 12 Namshans of the Round Council of the Dalai Lama. 12 inches in an imperial foot, 12 ounces in a troy pound, 12 old British pence in a shilling, 12 items in a dozen, 12 dozens in a gross (144, square of 12), 12 gross in a great gross (1728, cube of 12), 24 (12 * 2) hours in a day, etc. The Romans used a fraction system based on 12, including the uncia which became both the English words ounce and inch - and I'll bet that's more than you EVER wanted to know about the 12 pointed star! This star has a vernuil sapphire in the center, but you can have any stone, which may be more or less expensive.

The triangle represent the union of body, mind, and spirit, the circle stands for the Divine. In ceremonial magick the spirit summoned by the magician is contained within this symbol so that it cannot escape Thus this symbol is one of protection and power that long preceded it's use by Alcoholic's Anonymous. For AA it stands for the integration of personality.

This symbol is used by both magicians and members of Alcoholics Anonymous - for the magician the triangle is a place to hold the summoned spirit, for the AA member it is a symbol of the integration of personality (see above). This version has an amethyst in the center - the best stone for AA because it means "not drunken" in Greek. Magicians can take their pick of stone.
